The Lowes Island Elementary PTO welcomes you back to school!
We are really excited about the upcoming school year and look forward to providing students with some exciting events and activities while raising funds for classroom supplies and giving back to the community.
In order to do that, we need your help to assist in the following:
- Fundraising – The PTO strives to bring a variety of fun events and fundraising drives to the school that your entire family can enjoy. This includes joining the PTO as a member and paying a small $10 membership fee to help off-set the $80-$100 dollars we spend on average per-year per-student. Please join us!
- Volunteering – Get involved! We are 100% volunteer run. Everything the PTO does is made possible only with the help of our fantastic volunteers. There is a spot for everyone, and any amount of time is greatly appreciated!
- Attending Meetings – Stay in the know! Meetings provide the opportunity to share information with other members and learn about upcoming events. Our meetings are held in the school library at 6:30pm. Our meeting dates will be set soon, and updates will be posted on the school sign and sent via Mr. Sparbanie’s Peek at the Week messages.
If you have any questions, ideas to share, or would like to volunteer, please feel free to send an email.
We are looking forward to another fun & productive school year!

Please visit the PTO website https://lowesislandpto.membershiptoolkit.com/ to become a member for the 2018-2019 school year. If you were a Lowes Island PTO member last year, just log in, update your family/child's classroom info and pay the $10 dues for this year's membership. If you are new to LIES PTO, set up your account and become a part of our important organization.
Dues for PTO membership go toward every one of our efforts to support Lowes Island Elementary for our children, teachers and parents - all of it starts with a strong membership!
The PTO is making a huge effort to go paperless as much as possible. In doing so, we are relying on our website for the majority of our communication.
Please check us out at lowesislandpto.membershiptoolkit.com
This is where you will sign up for membership, access the PTO Member Directory, purchase Lowes Island Spirit Wear, Car Magnets, Lowes Islandopoly Board Games, volunteer to help out at one of our events, read our newsletters and meeting minutes, get updates on our Community Outreach projects, fundraising efforts, and much more! We truly hope you find this transition helpful as we aim to provide parents with a one stop shop for all things PTO.

ASAP (After School Activity Program)
Our fall season of ASAP will run for 6 weeks beginning in October and ending in November. Classes and prices will be available early this fall. If you are interested in teaching a class or helping with the program, please contact Katie Plys at email@example.com
All ASAP instructors and daily supervisors are PAID and receive one class for their student at no cost.
ASAP class registration is done strictly via the PTO website. Please be sure to register your family on our website now to ensure a smooth ASAP registration in the fall.
Our Community Outreach program, Leopards Lending a Hand (LLAH), is still going strong thanks to our amazing coordinators and the huge giving hearts of all of you in our LIES community! We thank everyone who helped out these last few years and welcome anyone new to join in our efforts! We'd love to get you and your kids involved! This year we will continue with some of our existing programs such as our coat drive, shoe drive and our Holiday online giving tree. We will focus on partnerships with LINK, Sterling Elementary, our cluster schools, Embry Rucker Shelter, Mobile Hope and look for new ways to give back to our wonderful community!
We’ll begin the fall with a tennis shoe drive, followed by a coat drive to benefit our friends in need in our community schools. More information will follow, but please hang onto those tennis shoes, jackets and sweatshirts that your kids have outgrown.
Lowes Island Elementary will again be participating in the Food Rescue Program with LINK. This program teaches our students to place food they don’t eat at lunch into the appropriate bins in the cafeteria and then is delivered to the Embry Rucker Shelter in Reston. This is food that the students bought for lunch and then never opened. Examples include sealed - milk, juice boxes, cheese sticks, fruit cups, yogurts.
Volunteers will be scheduled to pick up items from the LINK refrigerator in our cafeteria on a bi-weekly basis and delivered to the shelter. Please see the sign up genius below to volunteer. This a very easy, fun and rewarding volunteer opportunity that you can do as an individual, family, with kids (any age!). Great way for Scouts or for anyone needing service hours to earn them!
Stay tuned to the Peek and the Week for the latest LLAH information - we’ll have links to sign ups, information on upcoming programs and opportunities to get involved.
If you see a need, let us know…if you want to make a difference please join us!
It's never too early to start thinking about the Lowes Island Variety Show! Mark your calendars for March 8th, 2019 at Dominion High School. Our theme is 'Lowes Island has Pop'. Think pop stars, pop idols, pop culture....we are excited for all of the possibilities with this kid pleasing theme! More information on guidelines and how to register will come out this fall.
Copying / Laminating Volunteers
This year, LIES will continue using a centralized system to make copies for all teachers. The system is designed to maximize volunteer efforts while minimizing time wasted waiting in line when the copy machine is busy, broken or jammed. If you’ve never done copies or laminating, don’t worry. We will arrange for a short training session for all new volunteers.
Save the date for Halloween Bingo! Friday October 26th! Gather the family and join us for an evening of pizza, bingo, costume contests and fun raffles! If you have questions or would like to volunteer for this event, please contact or Kelley Sanchez or Jessica Howard.
Last year we raised almost $1000 just by clipping BoxTops and Labels for Education. Please be sure to send in trimmed BoxTops to your child’s teacher no later than the 15th of each month. If you have questions regarding BoxTops, please contact Emily Heleniak.
We are continuing to promote healthy lifestyles with our Walking Wednesday program, encouraging kids within walking distance of school to get in some extra steps and enter to win fun raffle prizes once a week!
Scouts at Lowes Island
Girl Scouts build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. There are openings for girls at all levels – Daisies (K-1), Brownies (2-3), and Juniors (4-5). We are also welcoming new adult volunteers.
Girls will participate in Girl Scouts crafts, game and songs while parents learn more about Scouting. Try new things. Make new friends. Go on more adventures than you can count. There’s a whole world of new opportunities waiting for you.
Please contact either Jennifer Rieker at 703-855-6682 firstname.lastname@example.org, or Jonelle Shipley at
Do you like to learn by doing? Your local Cub Scouting Pack 1152 (the youth program for Boy Scouts) focuses on building character, improving physical fitness, teaching practical skills, and developing a spirit of community service with a fun and exciting value-based program enjoyed by boys since 1910. Boys and girls ages 5 to 10 (kindergarten to fifth grade) are invited to join in the year-long fun -- camping, outings, service projects and much, much more!
We look forward to welcoming you to our Cub Scout family! Contact Fernando Gutierrez at email@example.com more information.
Stay tuned to the Peek at the Week for information on our upcoming “Join Scouts Night” for both Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts!
